Presented in celebration of Women's History Month, this talk will be given by Dr. Stanley R. Howe, BHS Associate Director and Director of Education and Research.

Margaret Chase Smith (1897-1995) was a Republican Senator from Maine, and one of the most successful politicians in Maine history.  She was the first woman to be elected to both the U.S. House and Senate, and the first woman from Maine to serve in either.  She was also the first woman to have her name placed in nomination for the U.S.

Spring's First Snowstorm is a bonus for Maine ski areas

The first snowfall of the Spring season was met with enthusiasm at Maine ski areas. More than half a foot fell across Maine creating winter like snow conditions at both downhill and cross country centers. According to Melissa Rock, Marketing Director at Shawnee Peak Ski Area, "Mother Nature doesn't seem to want to listen to the Groundhog this year!  He predicted an early spring, but she is still sending snow!  And we'll take it!"
 
As much as 8" fell at the higher elevations in the Western Mountains. "All of the major areas in Maine are open through this weekend including - Shawnee Peak, Mt Abram, Black Mountain, and Big Rock.  Sunday River, Sugarloaf and Saddleback will operate for several more weeks with May closing dates for Sugarloaf and Saddleback" says Greg Sweetser, Executive Director of the Ski Maine Association.

Calling All Artists to the Moore Park Art Show August 13, 201

SOUTH PARIS – The Moore Park Art Show in South Paris is seeking exhibitors for a celebration and sale of original arts, Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Rain date Aug. 14). The day will feature 60 artists and artisans with live entertainment and fine fare. The event is presented by the Town of Paris, Parks and Recreation Department is sponsored by the Western Maine Art Group and the Mahoosuc Arts Council.
Artists are being sought representing a broad spectrum of art including paintings, drawings, photography, wood, metal and glass sculpture; fine jewelry; handmade prints; fiber and textile/fiber arts and more. All art work must be the original design and creation of the exhibitor. Booths are limited. Artists also have the opportunity to submit work for awards judging.

Here are some photos of a couple of kids who swung by this to sample some of the syrup. We're also planning several events for Maine Maple Sunday on Sunday, March 27.

OXFORD COUNTY COMMISSIONS “COMMUNITY NOTIFICATION” SYSTEM

Oxford County.  Area residents and businesses will soon have a new tool to receive rapid information, notifications and warnings from public safety officials regarding dangerous incidents or other emergencies.  The new system, funded though a Homeland Security Grant Program, allows officials to provide essential and immediate information to virtually every household in Oxford County.  “If you have a working landline phone, we can warn you of a local danger,” stated Scott Parker of the Oxford County Emergency Management Agency.  Avtex corporation’s CITYWATCH system provides emergency officials the means to quickly deliver emergency message to areas as small as a few households or to the entire county.

Popular Sugarloaf, Sunday River, and Loon Mountain season pass products feature new payment plan option, new “Graduate Pass”

NEWRY, ME (March 15, 2011) – Sugarloaf, Sunday River, and Loon Mountain announced pricing today for the popular New England Pass and the College New England Pass, good for skiing and riding at all three resorts during the 2011/2012 season.
This year’s pass, which is now available for purchase online and at each resort during the annual spring sale period, features a new and improved payment plan for guests who purchase their passes before the April 30 deadline.
With the new payment plan, guests can pay just $50 at the time of purchase to lock-in the spring-sale pricing, and then complete the purchase in four equal, automatic installments on June 1, July 1, August, 1, and September 1.
