Release Party for the Newest Diary of a Wimpy Kid book by Jeff Kinney

To promote literacy and parent involvement at Oxford Elementary School,
the teachers in grades 4, 5 & 6 are hosting a release party for the newest
Diary of a Wimpy Kid book by Jeff Kinney at the school on Nov. 9th (The
book's release date.) from 4:30-6:00 PM. Every grade 4-6 Oxford Elementary
School  child who attends will receive a free copy of the book. There will
be parent discussion groups to help parents support their child's literacy
development at home. At the same time, there will be fun activities for
children that are based on the book series.

Childhood Obesity Conference in Bangor on Monday November, 8

Studies indicate that some forty percent of Maine's youth entering kindergarten is overweight or obese. In addition to hindering healthy lifestyles, obesity costs the American people billions in medical expenses every year. The EMHS Youth Healthy Lifestyle Project, Let’s Go! - EMHS is partnering with schools, communities and others to find ways that together we can curb childhood obesity. Many of these folks will gather in Bangor next Monday.

The theme of the 2010 Maine Childhood Obesity Community session, hosted by Let’s Go!  - EMHS is to inspire, invigorate, educate, and collaborate. The “share and learn” session, beginning at 9am on Monday November 8, at the Bangor Hilton Garden Inn seeks to bring together individuals and organizations working in their communities to combat childhood obesity.

Mother-Son to be featured Artists in Norway for month of November

November is family exhibit month in Norway sponsored by the Western Maine Art Group. The featured artists at the Norway Savings Bank Operations Center at 356 Main street for the month are the mother and son artistic team of painter Barbara Traficonte and Photographer Steve Traficonte.

Barbara graduated with a bachelor of fine art from Douglass College, Rutgers University in 1963.  Her major field was studio art and her minor fields were teaching and American literature.  After moving to Maine she continued to take painting classes at the Maine College of Art in Portland.  She now paints and teaches others to paint.  Barbara lives in Waterford, Maine with her husband. Their nest is now empty but their lives are filled with the joy of painting and owning the 100 Aker Wood Frame Shop and Art Supply Store on Main Street in Norway.  Barbara shows her work throughout the state and has won numerous awards.

Black Mountain's Octoberfest will feature a 5k Trail Run, Ski Swap, Early-Early Bird Seasons Pass Specials, a Beer Tasting, and Live Entertainment.

The day will kick of at 8am with a 5k/10k Trail Run, and Kids Fun Run. Our Ski Swap event will take place from 8am - 12pm, which will provide an opportunity for families to pick up a new pair of skis for the winter at great prices. Throughout the day there will be a Silent Auction to benefit the Need to Ski Program, as well as opportunities to renew your Mug Club Membership. The evening will feature a Beer Tasting and Dinner Event from 5 - 7pm brought to you by Shipyard and Gourmet in a Pinch. The DEAL OF THE DAY though, is our EARLY-EARLY Bird Season Pass Special.

Award-Winning Vocal Quartet

Syncopation is a modern A Cappella group that centers its focus on jazz, specifically bebop, pop and Latin elements. The group recently won the 24th Annual Boston Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival Award. The group consists of four superb vocalists, including the soprano Aubrey Logan, alto Christine Fawson, tenor David Thorne Scott, and bass Tsunenori "Lee" Abe. The group formed in 2002 and has toured nationally within the US and Japan.

The group has released several CDs, most recently the album Wonderful You, where the group interprets pop songs that have been popular over the past 30 years. They have also been reviewed by the Boston Globe as excellent and having been described as 'The Manhattan Transfer for the 21st Century'.

Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce presents the 2010 Chamber Awards

The Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that nominations are now being taken for the Annual Chamber Dinner & Awards Ceremony scheduled for Saturday, January 29, 2011. The awards will be for Citizen of the Year; Business of the Year; Employee of the Year; and Rising Star of the Year.
The nominations need to be submitted to the Chamber no later then Friday, November 19thand you can pick up a nomination form at the office located at 4 Western Avenue in South Paris or go directly online and download a form.
Executive Director John Williams said in a statement released by the Chamber, "These awards have been a tradition in the communities of the Oxford Hills for nearly 40 years, providing an opportunity to honor those who have been at the forefront of making our area a better place to live, work and play!
