The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, or Do Not Forget Your Bug Spray

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, or Do Not Forget Your Bug Spray

A couple of weekends ago I had a (rare) lazy Saturday.  I browsed through the home shelf and picked my copy of Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon (I bought it at GoodWill earlier this year :-).  I read this book in a single day.

Trisha McFarland is strong and determined.  She is resourceful and brave.  She survives falls, getting wet, stung, she endures hunger, thirst...

While Stallone, Schwarzenegger and the rest of the lumbering action movie troglodytes are earning the name of their latest movie “The Expendables 2,” a bunch of young whippersnappers are riding rings around them in “Premium Rush,” also a particularly apt title.

What we have here is a non-stop bicycle chase movie, filmed with little or no CGI on the crowded streets of New York City.

4th Annual Maine Native American Summer Market

The fourth annual Maine Native American Summer Market and Demonstration will be held on Saturday August 25, 2012 from 10am-3:30pm at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in New Gloucester.

Special features new this year include drumming, singing and dancing performances by the Penobscot Nation's Burnurwurbskek Singers and the Passamaquoddy tribe's Sipayik Dance Troupe, combined with traditional story-telling and flute playing by David Sanipass, a member of the Aroostook Band of Micmacs. In addition to these scheduled performances, there will be more than 25 Native American artists from among the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac and Maliseet tribes in Maine selling their crafts and demonstrating their skills throughout the day.

The Red Carpet for the Hopelessly Bookish

You may know my personal rule - that I make every effort to read the book before I see the movie.

USA Today posted a list of 10 book-y movies to watch for in the coming months.  Some I've already read, and a couple I better get crackin' on!

Beware of Bears!

Beware of Bears!

We took a little camping trip to the White Mountain National Forest.  WONDERFUL trip... but the warnings about bears were everywhere!  Just a little bit scary!

I brought along Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods.  What a great read.  I laughed til I was crying, but I also lamented, along with Bryson, the fragility of our wilderness and the ways that American life have removed us so much from, well, nature.

And now I notice Appalachian Trail stuff everywhere - Bill Green's "Green Outdoors" story tonight is about the AT, and this past weekend the AT celebrated its 75th birthday!  So timely!  READ MORE
